Following proposals by several European youth organisations, the International Advisory Board of
the World Youth Congress has unanimously proposed Pierre Mairesse's nomination as a Champion of
Youth in 2008 in recognition of a 10-year career dedicated to providing better services in Europe
for young people. Mr Mairesse has received his award at a ceremony in Québec City in presence of
Her Excellency, The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, who is also a
nominee for this year's Champion of Youth Award. The Ceremony has marked the celebrations of
International Youth Day (August 12th) and of Quebec City's 400th anniversary.
The 4th World Youth Congress has brought together 600 of the world's most dynamic young
activists in the field of sustainable development to Quebec from 120 different countries. The ONG
Peace Child International created the World Youth Congress series. At every World Youth Congress, a
number of adults are honoured for their courageous support of youth issues and their leadership in
securing the investment from government and the private sector required to meet the most urgent
needs of young people around the world.
The presentation of these awards is a key feature of each World Youth Congress. The Award is
reportedly unique in the world. People who have won this award to date include: James Wolfensohn,
former President of the World Bank; Rick Little, Founder of Quest International and International
Youth Foundation.
Mr Mairesse has been very honoured to receive this award not only in his name but also in the
name of all the colleagues he worked with, to support youth in the European policies.
